Celebration and Revival of 1960s Idealism
"Peace-In '97" Kicks Off Thursday

WHO: Created and coordinated by Los Angeles artist Kalan and The New House in cooperation with the Olvera Street community and City of Los Angeles.

WHAT: A two day celebration and revival of the spirit of the 60's, including live music, dance, art, a diverse variety of guest speakers and performers, initial design of Los Angeles' newest landmark: the Peace Wall, Tree Hugging, participation and support of the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments, and numerous community and non-profit groups.

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 23; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Jan. 25.

WHERE: Olvera Street's Plaza Bandstand and adjacent courtyard. Intersection of Alameda Street and Sunset Boulevard in Downtown Los Angeles.

WHY: Explains event coordinator and Los Angeles artist Kalan, "We hope to remind everyone who attends that the love and idealism of the 1960's are still possible today. The children need to learn about it and the grownups dneed to remember it. Everyone involved in this event has a commitment to revitalize the hope, camraderie, peace and goodwill that the best of the 60's created."

1:00 PM, Thursday, January 23: LA Mounted Police visit. First Children's Peace Demonstration.

Groups from various cultures will perform music both traditional and modern throughout the event. Tree hugging, dancing, fire-eating, juggling, and magic will also be constant.
