PEACE-IN '97 BRINGS BACK 60s IDEALISM
AT OLVERA STREET PLAZA BANDSTAND JANUARY 23 AND 25
Peace-In Los Angeles 1997, the first annual celebration of the spirit
and idealism of the 1960s, kicks off Thursday Jan. 23 at 9 AM at the Plaza
Bandstand of Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles (intersection of Alameda
and Sunset). The event continues through 5 PM Thursday and returns Saturday,
10 AM to 7 PM.
Coordinated by noted Los Angeles artist Kalan and The New House and in
conjunction with the Merchants of Olvera Street and the City of Los Angeles,
the event will feature live music, dance, art, and a diverse variety of guest
speakers and performers. Adults and children will take part in events
such as creating a new Los Angeles City Peace Wall, face painting, and tree
hugging. Children will march for peace through the plaza in the Children’s
Demonstration.
On January 23rd, the Peace-In will honor World Peace Meditation Day.
Inspired by a rare conjunction of planets and stars, World Peace
Meditation Day was first anticipated in 1993 and has since spread via the
Internet such that hundreds of organizations throughout the world are
gathering simultaneously to support peace.
