                      The Grunge Beach Manifesto
                            August 8, 1994

Regarding the Jamming of an Absurd Culture as Conceptual Art

It was several years ago that the first semaphore flags went up
over GRUNGE BEACH. GRUNGE BEACH was uncovered as the pot of guacamole
at the end of the WOOZEBEAM. Ronald RayGun's Shining City on the Hill
overlooked GRUNGE BEACH. It is known that deadrubber is glod on
GRUNGE BEACH, but this knowledge is not good for much. However, the
road kill on The Information Superhighway will most assuredly wash up
on GRUNGE BEACH.
GRUNGE BEACH was concieved by and for the communication junkie.
What is art if not communication? Morse code is art. Morse code is
definitely art. Therefore, a 1964 Buick painted as a security patrol
car still stands at the entrance to the complex, designed by Horace
Heidt to resemble a Hawaiian Village or a Palm Springs Resort.
GRUNGE BEACH is about jamming. In our context, jamming devolves
from the physical process of rendering communication channels useless,
turning their own processes against themselves, usually fractally.
Classically, jamming is deliberate insertion of enough communication
to confuse signal and noise, so that (per Shannon's Law) the total
bandwidth drops to zero. Jamming can be brutal and stupid ("hammer
down" CB wars), cunning and predatory (Iraq's fake Voice of Free
Kuwait), or even unwittingly self-induced (USENET, TV nooz, Congress).
But jamming is art. We know this from World War II, and notably
from the way "Ivan the Terrible" ran Hitler's largest propaganda radio
from the air with just a few well-chosen, snide remarks. Woe that the
Russians, too, lost their touch. Serves them right that most of their
ultra-power transmitters now carry Gene Scott. We know where the
semiotic New World Order has gone. We know only too well.
This should be a wake-up call! Again today, it is the duty of the
artistically literate to confound the machine. Since the 80s merger
wars, all "reality" is mediated by 23 companies. What you think, feel
and dream now comes from 23 board rooms, a few hundred individuals,
maybe ten survey consultants. You might think Fox and Viacom are your
friends. You might continue to support these media. You might well
become a slave.
O.J. Simpson, who came to believe his own press releases, is a
slave. Nicole Simpson, who married The Juice rather than the man, was
a slave. (Now she is a dead slave.) The thousand televiewers,
assembled like locusts on the 405 freeway to cheer their white-bronco
abstraction along, are slaves. We have seen the 90s, and they suck.
There are no slaves on GRUNGE BEACH. (There isn't much of anything
on GRUNGE BEACH.)
So we speak today of jamming; we make more images, we make more
seductive images, we render the images of our would-be masters
ridiculous. We plant concept bombs. We confound the nooz media. We
chuckle as their megabuck satellite stations race around the trees,
turning to expensive butter. We raise our own virtual dishes into the
cold night. The map is in our sock.
Cultural jamming is resistance. It is hardly new, but it is the
last tool we have. We will use it. Per Jello Biafra, noted mayoral
candidate, singer and inspiration to Asswipe the Clown, "A prank a day
keeps the dog collar away."
Kultur must eat itself. Yours for art,

they still make the V15? I paid $67 for mine, shows how old it is, think
they're $250 now.

I am also a fan of the RE15, the mike you take along on location in case you
need to pound nails and don't want to break your Sennheiser.

anyways, an item washed up on Grunge Beach for HAL 9000:

LA TIMES 3.20.97 SCIENCE FILE - Sience in Brief

After a 30-year search, scientists have apparently identified the switch that
keeps human female embryos from overdosing on thier own genes.

The Xist turns off excess genes permanently, apparently by covering them with a
chemical blanket, a team from the Institute of Cancer Research in London
reports in Nature. The discovery could some day allow researchers to turn off
cancer and other desireable genes.

The excess genes are on the X chromosome (makes sense to me -ed), one of the
microscopic strands that carry DNA. Men inherit one copy of that chromosome;
women get two. Two is too many (clever reporter - ed), because the resulting
double dose of genes would kill an embryo. So in every cell of a female embryo,
one copy of the X chromosome is shut off, except for certain genes. It is then
inherited in this largely inert form by later generations of cells.

#10/19: By: Beledi (#65) : Actually, that bit about the two X chromosomes
 04/03/97 11:03pm

being too many is not entirely accurate. Yes, certain genes are shut off, but
there is a benefit to two X chromosomes because the extra X masks certain
undesirable characteristics- like color blindness- that would otherwise be
prevalent in women, just as they are in men. Also, the exta X remains in the
cell, and is not entirely inert. The research has not yet been completed as
far as just exactly what it does.

Also, just a little note here- biologist have discovered more about the male
and female brains and how they operate. It turns out that men can only use one
hemisphere at a time, and it takes a while for them to be able to switch from
one to the other. Women, on the other hand, can, and do, use both at the same
time.

#12/19: By: gosubrun (#16) : eek! well
 04/05/97 11:13pm

that is somewhat innacurate as well; it's not like one half LIGHTS UP
or anything and all crosstalk is eliminated, or you would smash into
things walking while talking. Gerald Ford, ibid.

also, utilization and wider access to both hemispheres seems related to
linguistic perception and relationships. People showing those characteristics
of either gender will have more open communication and multitasking.

and it's just like girls to keep a little something in reserve...

#13/19: By: Joseph (#1) (SysOp) : one half lights up

and the other takes a puff. City of Lost Children, anyone?

mean-the-while, gosubrun's right. no way one of your hemispheres can turn off,
unless you have serious damage. then it's not exactly easy to turn it on
again.

according to what was not terribly recent research three or four years ago, the
corpus collossum, the "large body" connecting the two hemispheres and allowing
for communication between them, tends to be slightly larger (in proportion to
the rest of the brain) in women than in men.

this means women's hemispheres communicate between themselves better, on the
whole, statistically, probably-we-think. which means, to take a scientific
leap of some measure, that women infuse more diverse and multilevel thinking
into a typical thought, combining intuition with rationality with emotion with
dreams with reality.

whereas men, with less going on in parallel, are more clearheaded, in both
meanings of the word.

maybe.

#14/19: By: Radio Free Willy (#3) (SIGOp) : La got one contact lens.
 04/08/97 10:22am

The doctor said that it was possible to wear a contact ground for reading on
one eye, and a contact ground for distance on the other. Either it gave you a
set of virtual, context-switching bifocals, or it just gave you one hell of a
headache. Women are, apparently, far more likely to get the bifocals, because
of the somewhat more efficient data bus mentioned above. Apparently, men are
way more likely to get the headache.

It worked fine for La.

We men have our hardware quirks, but I am getting tired of how most of our
gender just seem to give in to them and become wannabe John Wayne or something.

whatever biological differences may exist between men and women, they are never
an excuse for either sex to act superior- potential seems to be such an
individual thing, and sex seems to me more of a psychological limitation than
an actual one.

I am a bit envious of womens dress not because of dresses, but because
they git to wear all the FUN stuff! Neet-o colors and paterns and
what not - from time to time I wear a school-bus yellow shirt with
a rain bow tie - it was a gift - and was real expensive so when
